Rogers Cup Pick: Andy Murray

Name: Andy Murray
Current ATP Rank: 4
Can he win the title? Yes, but he needs to play a lot better than he did in L.A.

Murray made the final of the Farmers Classic in L.A. last week where he lost to Sam Querrey. He was certainly not looking his best and he's going to need to play much, much better if he wants to compete with players like Federer and Nadal at the Rogers Cup. Before the Farmers Classic I would have said Murray was one of the favourites to win in Toronto this year (after all, he is the defending champion), but if he plays like he did last week then he'll be lucky to make the semifinals.

However, the fact that Murray has had some match play since Wimbledon (unlike Roger and Rafa) might give him the confidence he needs to do well at the Rogers Cup. I'm going to assume that his questionable play last week was just because he hadn't competed in a while, and that he'll be back on track in Toronto. Murray is obviously a good enough player to make the finals and win this event, but I think how well he does will have a lot to do with who's in his half of the draw.
