Canada Defeats Spain in Davis Cup World Group Play

A year ago nobody could have predicted that Canada would beat Spain in a Davis Cup event. With a seemingly never ending roster of great players like Rafa Nadal, David Ferrer, Nicolas Almagro, and Feliciano Lopez, Spain is considered to be one of the top countries in the sport—certainly stronger than Canada with it's one player in the top fifty.

Yet here we are, in 2013, with Canada beating Spain to advance to the second round of Davis Cup World Group play for the first time....ever. Sure, Spain didn't have many of their top players there (okay fine, Spain didn't have ANY of their top players there), and it likely would have been an impossible task for Canada to have beaten Spain if Nadal and/or Ferrer were in attendance, but this win still matters, and it's a big deal for Canadian tennis.

For the first time ever, Canada has produced a player that people are talking about—and not just those people in the tennis world. Milos Raonic is slowly becoming a household name in Canada, and his success is a great thing for the sport of tennis in Canada.

Now if he could just win one of those pesky grand slams...

More Love for the Serbian Davis Cup Team

I don't know what's going on with me lately, but I have some serious love for the Serbian Davis Cup team. But how could I not? Look how happy they are! It melts my icy heart.

Davis Cup Hero of the Day: Janko Tipsarevic

Janko Tipsarevic was on fire today in his Davis Cup match against Radek Stepanek. He defeated Stepanek in straight sets, giving Serbia the win over the Czech Republic. Janko's victory also means that Serbia will go to the Davis Cup final in December for the first time ever where they will face France.

I was rooting for Serbia to win, since I love Tipsy and don't particularly like Stepanek, but I was sort of surprised to find myself getting teary eyed when Janko won the match and the Serbian team rushed over to celebrate with him. It was a great celebration though, with Janko falling to his knees and gesturing for his teammates to come join him, and really, who doesn't love an emotional sports win? Check it out for yourself:

Davis Cup Update: Serbia vs. Czech Republic

Novak Djokovic was scheduled to play against Radek Stepanek in the opening day's singles match, but he was forced to withdraw due to medical reasons. Novak, who surely would have beaten Radek, was replaced by Viktor Troicki who was, unfortunately, beaten in four sets by Stepanek. It seemed like the Czechs were going to win the next match as well, as Janko Tipsarevic was scheduled to play against the world number 7 Tomas Berdych, but Tipsarevic pulled off the win to even the score at 1-1. Djokovic and Zimonjic are currently playing doubles against Berdych and Stepanek, with the Serbians winning the first set and the Czechs winning the second.

Federer Skips Davis Cup and the Swiss Cry

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA - SEPTEMBER 11: George Bastl and Roger Federer bump into one another while warming up during the Swiss Davis Cup teams practice session at Melbourne Park on September 11, 2003 in Melbourne, Australia. (Photo by Mark Dadswell/Getty Images).
Look how much fun young Federer used to have with his Davis Cup friends

Roger wrote the following on his official website:

Dear Fans,
I have decided not to join the Davis Cup team to Kazakhstan. I need some extra time to relax after the intense weeks in North America so I can finish the year strong.
See you soon,
Roger

I don't think anyone will be too surprised by this. I guess it is a little surprising as Roger has played a tie for the Swiss team every September since 2004 to help the team keep their elite status in the Davis Cup. But as he gets older it's probably better for him to focus on staying healthy for the slams, and I want him around for as long as possible, so if he thinks this is the best idea for him then that's good enough for me.
